PERSONAL NOTE
Is forgiveness a legitimate tool to achieve reconciliation in a context were both sides are victims and victimizers? That`s the question El Carnaval Del Diablo asks to its audience.
The artistic approach is constantly referencing Colombian tragedies by using objects that are embedded in the cultural memory and are symbols for the conflict. Also, the use of coca leafs and banana palms (also metaphors for the conflict) helps to create some kind of natural walls that are used as hiding places for the dancers. The contradiction that wants to be stated is that our natural wealthiness and beauty is simultaneously our doom. In the same way, carnivals and national holidays in Colombia have always had that meaning of either hiding or relieving the pain caused by the conflict.
